Wired’s View of Laboratory Compliance

DAMAS or the Dental Appliance Manufacturers Audit Scheme is the most commonly used quality system within the dental laboratory industry that provides a framework for an effective quality management system which enables dental laboratories to prove to their clients that they are operating within the law (Medical Devices Regulations MDR).

In dentistry we all huff and puff about compliance, drag folders out, roll our eyes but really it should be viewed as a positive.

We are all so busy that we need to be forced to make time for the boring stuff that can actually have positive benefits to the business by identifying problems early via reviews, monitoring and documentation of lab systems.

DAMAS provides laboratories with a set of processes that ensure a common sense approach to the management of the organisation. The system ensures consistency and improvement of working practices, which in turn should provide products and services that meet customer’s requirements.

A review of all of our working practices, training logs and capabilities gives us the opportunity to step back and see where we can develop skills and identify training shortfalls. It’s certainly our experience that the auditor isn’t looking to fail but to help. Insightful conversations and positive ideas have come from others with wide experience in the dental industry.

A look at any complaint provides a base for continuous improvement, allows us to develop and improve the business which allows us to be the best orthodontic laboratory we can be.

Making sure all of our materials are CE compliant and the data sheets are filed helps limit the risk of litigation for both the lab and surgery.

Questioning what we do and the materials and techniques we use and updating them can only be positive.
